OUR STORY BEGINS

at my grandfather’s grocery store in New York City’s Chinatown.

These are my earliest memories of tasting Cantonese BBQ. As a toddler, I remember the BBQ chefs handing me a treat of crispy pork belly or roast duck.

In that moment, and still to this day, Cantonese BBQ brings me great joy.

I seek it out in every city I visit.
I eat it when I want to celebrate.
I eat it when I need comfort.
It is my soul food.

My old friend and mentor, Chef Martin Yan, once told me,  “Food is a bridge. It helps build cultural understanding.”

In these times, I hope that YāYā can bring some joy and understanding into the world.

Dear friends and family,

we have made the heart breaking decision to close YaYa this coming Sunday night (8/28)

We did not come to this decision lightly. It hurts us deeply that we will no longer be able to provide our customers with our Cantonese BBQ.

When we opened 14 months ago, Portland was still in the depths of the pandemic. Beyond the lockdowns, the numerous other challenges ranging from staffing & supply chain shortages, illnesses, food & transportation costs (to name a few) have made it impossible to keep YaYa open.

We would like to thank everyone in the Alberta neighborhood and beyond that supported us, we are grateful that we were given the chance to cook for you over the past year & we all look forward to what the future brings.

Our final day of business will be this Sunday, August 28th.

Best,
Steven Chin + Staff
